About us and our programme

At Waikanae kindergarten we promote a welcoming and friendly environment where the wellbeing, belonging and learning of everyone is important. We value all children having opportunities to be learners, risk takers, questioners, free thinkers, decision makers, and celebrators.

We value relationships with our children, whānau and the wider community, and we constantly work to deepen these relationships.

We are a team who loves learning in many fun ways.

The environment is purposefully planned to support learning. We honour our position within Ko Rata Te Ngahere (Russell Reserve) and have an emphasis on Papatuanuku, where children have opportunities to make connections with the living world.

We run a bush explorers programme where we go into the bush with a small group of children on a weekly basis to connect with nature and foster an appreciation of this natural learning resource.

We are guided by our New Zealand curriculum Te Whariki, to help children grow as learners in an enjoyable and empowering way. Consistency and continuity are key for children and our routines support this. We respect children’s diverse learning pathways and help them to build strong identities of themselves as competent and confident lifelong learners.

As 100% trained and registered teachers we promote empowering children to make their own decisions. We encourage children to recognise their contributions to their learning environment.
