About us and our programme

York Street Kindergarten is semi-rural, situated on the corners of Pownall, York and Intermediate streets. Our large outdoor environment faces the Intermediate School farm which offers a rural outlook and feel with farm animals nearby, and the Millennium Reserve across the road with its bushy outlook.

Our large outdoor environment incorporates our living pēpeha which includes our rolling Maungaraki Hills, Castlepoint Rocks, our tall Mount Taratahi and our lush Tararua forest. Ākonga spend their days climbing, running, jumping, sliding and exploring in an environment that is inclusive of diversity, fosters positive interactions, embraces curiosity and works in partnership to grow confident and competent learners, all the while laying the foundations for lifelong learning.

At York Street Kindergarten, the Calmer Classroom Programme is strongly integrated throughout our curriculum, environment and philosophy. We offer a localised curriculum which supports the social, emotional, physical and sensory regulation of ākonga within the learning environment. The initial and ongoing implementation of the programme has been praised by MOE.

Our localised curriculum is responsive to the needs of ākonga and whānau alike, interest based and allows for flexibility throughout the day.  We welcome visitors who are interested in enrolling so come in and visit us!
