About us and our programme

Our kindergarten is a community resource for our local families – and has been since 1963. We are so fortunate to have our kindergarten nestled into the native bush here in Northland. We have many children aged 2-6 attending from Kelburn, Karori and Northland as well as coming from other surrounding suburbs. We have a wonderful community, with whānau who love to be involved, collaborate and support our kindergarten with events, our environment and the running of our day.

We value localised curriculum, weaving our place and community into the programme in ways that are meaningful for our tamariki and whānau. This includes termly hikoi, to our local school and up Te Ahumairangi, for our rangatira (oldest tamariki).

Our tamariki experience an environment where they can express and learn about themselves as we have a strong emphasis on supporting the children’s social and emotional learning.

Our tikanga focuses on manaakitanga, we show kindness and respect to ourselves, our friends and teachers and the environment. Finding ways to be sustainable is important to us. We care for and connect with te taiao - the natural environment and have a focus on curiosity and kaitiakitanga as we care for Papatūānuku and Tane Māhuta.

Northland Kindergarten provides high quality care and education to everyone in our community.  Our kindergarten environment is designed by the teaching team to be exciting, challenging and to foster exploration through a range of different areas of play. We are well resourced with a large spacious outdoor area; this fosters a learning environment that encourages children to become capable and confident learners.

We have a mix of teacher-led experiences as well as a flexible flow to our teaching day, allowing children to have choice and agency. Our community have a strong sense of kotahitanga (unity and coming together as one) to learn in a group setting. We develop individual and group experiences for all our learners - ensuring that our tamariki have equitable opportunities to be included and engaged in meaningful learning and play.
